With Eurostar & The Peninsula
The year 2017 has been insane, beyond our wildest dreams in fact! The Philippines, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, The Tioman Islands, Perhentian Islands, Singapore, Raja Ampat, Bali, The Gili Islands, The Maldives, The Bahamas… Are you out of breath yet? So are we! We wrapped up 2017 by spending Christmas at home with our families, a special end to this crazy year. This time spent with our nearest and dearest was so much more significant and precious having spent just shy of two years away from them before the end of 2017. But, no sooner had we shared a glass of the good stuff and toasted to 2018 with our friends and family, we were again ready to be wild for a while.
Paris is always a good idea right? Well we can’t believe that it’s taken us over 7 years of our relationship to journey the sweet and short distance from England to the city of love!
Back in early 2016 when The Wanderlovers got its big break and was featured in just about every UK national newspaper you can think of (still don’t know how that happened, apparently the general consensus was that we had our heads in the clouds for leaving our 50k a year jobs to travel the world. Head in the clouds maybe, but the sky is no longer the limit!), we were contacted by Eurostar who invited us to experience the city of lights all for ourselves. Being in Europe at the turn of the year, our long overdue venture to Paris with Eurostar was to be our first trip of 2018.
Sat in the Eurostar business lounge at Kings Cross, London, we boarded the first train of the day. The journey was a smooth one and those familiar buzzes of adventure, excitement and anticipation returned.
It can be something as simple as a smell that can evoke those familiar feelings and we found this for sure in Paris’ histroric district of Montmartre. We could have walked and talked the cobblestone streets forever and come to think of it, we did! Handcrafted crepes in hand and mulled wine stained lips to prove it, this will forever remind us of the marvels of Montmartre!
We spent our days wandering and weaving through the Parisian streets, stopping at cute and cosy bistros of all shapes, sizes and brews along the way, soaking up the café culture eyeing artists and fashionistas alike, providing some much needed refreshment before climbing the 284 steps to the top of the Arc de Triomphe for some of the best views across the twelve avenues of the city.
All this sightseeing and step walking had made us hungry (yes, even after the copious amount of crepes we ate for breakfast!) and luckily for us, we had been invited to experience lunch in one of the most elegant and exquisitely Parisian hotel, The Peninsula. We wined and dined the afternoon away, dining in the grand Le Lobby for lunch and drinking in the panoramic views across the rooftops at the aviation themed L’oiseau Blanc rooftop restaurant. With satisfied stomachs and blurry eyes, we walked off our delightful dinner at the Louvre, where we stayed until the sun sank in the sky and pink hues filled the air.
The gem of Paris is of course the Eiffel Tower and for good reason. It must be one of the most photographed structures in the World. For many others and I have held the Eiffel Tower in the highest regard since a young age. An iconic landmark that has stood the test of time and it was something of a milestone to witness its monumental magnificence from each and every corner of Paris, giving the city its identity, life and soul.
All of the lights, in the city of lights. Paris is a place where just walking down a street that I've never been to before is like going to a movie. We can't wait for the re-run.
