Angsana Velavaru Resort
Sun, sand and seaplanes, this is the spirit of the Maldives and we were about to experience this all for ourselves heading to the sensational southern Atolls with Angsana Velavaru.
Arriving into Velana International Airport to gorgeous glowing sunshine, we were full of excitement and anticipation to board our seaplane transfer to our resort. After a smooth and speedy check in, we were called to the seaway! Sun sparkling off the wing, the beaming crew, sunglasses to match, kindly assisted us with our luggage as they welcomed us aboard. Taking front row seats up top with the pilots, we got our camera ready as we zipped off the sea and effortlessly gained altitude. Soon we were eyeing the marvels of the Maldives surrounded by salty sparkling seas. For just under an hour we admired the beauty of the Maldives from the skies, laying eyes on the tiny islets that make these 26 ring shaped atolls some of the most sought after locations on the planet. It was then our captain pointed into the distance, Angsana Velavaru!
The entrance to the Velavaru reef housing the secluded sands set apart from the in-ocean villas resting on the reef and the unrivalled blues of the marine, made for the grandest of entrances. The resort perched magnificently against the backdrop of Paradise; we will never forget our perfect picture postcard landing into the Southern Dalhuu Atoll. Disembarking the plane, a speedboat, complete with plush furnishings and refreshments awaited our arrival to transfer us to the private island.
As the chalky whites of the island sands came into view, we spotted the beach villas dotted around the islet, housed amongst the leafy lush palms which were to be our home for the next few nights. Welcomed off the boat while our luggage was again taken care of, we arrived to wide smiles and the friendly folk of Angsana Velavaru who wasted no time in showing us to our Velavaru Villa, pointing out areas of interest on our short stroll.
Angsana Velavaru is an all-villa resort, offering luxurious accommodation types for all preferences including beachfront villas with private pools and jet pools, 2 bedroom villas complete with private pools and gardens perfect for families and the crown jewel of the resort; the in-ocean pool villas with a choice of either a sunset or sunrise view, depending on whether you are an early riser or a night owl!
In fact, the resort is the only resort in the Maldives that offers in-ocean villas that are seperate to the main island, housed stunningly on the opposite side of the Velavaru reef. Short boat journeys will transport you effortlessly (and frequently for that matter) between both the villas and the island, giving guests the ultimate choice between land and ocean ambiences. It really is a sight to behold as the villas stand proudly above the crystal clear cyan blues of the reef.
We wasted no time in checking out our private piece of paradisiacal beach that lay just metres from our ring shaped hut that opens onto a large wooden veranda complete with cosy loungers, should we not care to venture too far to the oceanfront. But boy was it worth wading our toes through the powder to the seafront. The kaleidoscopic scope of blues that inhabit the Velavaru reef are simply breath-taking. In all of our travels we will be hard pushed to beat these multi tonal blues that weave in and out of the sloping sandbank.
We spent our days in between the leafy lawns of our villa and the beach, dipping into the pool just as the salt had started to bake on our bodies. It was as if we had the whole place to ourselves as we drank in the aura of the island, not another person in sight with only the swaying of the palms and the dissipating shoreline for company. A short walk around the island is highly recommended, where you can pick a slice of heaven to get lost on and either lap up the rays on the beach or dip into the warm, creamy calm waters of the Indian Ocean from all sides of the island!
One of our favourite activities before dinner was spotting the stingrays. These gracious creatures would glide through the ocean to the beach for an up and close performance and if you were lucky enough, you could also spot them while snorkelling the reef too. For those wanting to explore the reef a little more adventurously, there is a myriad of water sports including kayaking, jet skiing and banana boating for all ages! It is also possible to venture further into the deep where a speedboat will take you dolphin watching, or for dive enthusiasts, there is also a 5 star PADI shop giving dive enthusiasts of all levels a chance to experience over 30 diving locations within the Atoll.
As for dining options, guests can choose to dine either in-ocean or on land depending on their palette for the evening. Kaani restaurant is an all-day dining affair on the beach serving a wide range of international dishes where you can also enjoy a more romantic drink under the stars at the Kuredi bar. For those looking to dress to impress and for something a little more a la carte, board the boat and head across in-ocean to the Azzurro restaurant and bar. Serving mainly Mediterranean cuisine, the ambiance of this restaurant is one to savour over a glass of the good stuff or a signature cocktail.
Angsana Velavaru was simply an out of this World experience. From our jaw dropping entrance by sea plane to our stay throughout we got to experience first class facilities amongst the natural beauty of a secluded island stay in the Maldives. A stay at Angsana Velavaru is not just the Maldives, but a way of life and a slice of paradise.
